9 “Modern” objects that were invented before your grandparents were born

Published

on

If you have ever heard that things like bullying or friendzone already existed since ancient times even before they had names, surely it will not be difficult to get you to the idea that complicated systems like that of a smartphone, a computer or a robot are not at all a 21st-century innovation.

These are 10 creations much older than you imagined.

1. Smartphone

Cell phones in antiquity? The painter of this work was called Umberto Romano, and although it seems that he only made a mural representative of the colonization in the United States, this painting titled  Mr. Pynchon and the Settling of Springfield  seems to approach to the future of an excessive way, since in it appears an indigenous with a rectangular shaped piece similar to smartphones . It’s probably just a mirror and you’re not taking a selfie, but you never know.

2. Seismometer

In the year 132, scientist and astronomer Zhang Heng invented the first earthquake detector in the history of mankind, almost one thousand seven hundred years earlier than the Europeans. The artifact was of bronze and had the shape of a vase; if a seismic motion was detected, a bronze ball was fired into the mouths of the toads, although it was not possible to determine the level of each alert.

3. Batteries

The first batteries were not those of the famous bunny, but a container invented two thousand and 500 years before Christ, that had as base a platform of copper and iron in its nucleus; it is said that the voltage produced in it was made possible by the electrochemical method of galvanizing.

4. Automatic doors

Ancient Greek buildings already used gigantic automatic gates that worked with a steam engine. It was not magic or the work of the gods, but the illusory effect seemed like that.

5. Sewer system

Wastewater has existed since ancient times. Already in Babylon, China and some cities of the Roman Empire, a system called cloaca was implemented; is the same that we adopt and continue to use today.

6. Robots

The first robot arose from the need for someone to make the beacon bells ring in the sea and announce to the navigators that it was approaching the coast. Its mechanism was designed as a human or animal figure and could make one another movement.

7. Alarm

Although mechanical clocks first appeared in China, the philosopher Plato was the first to use an alarm. To create a reminder of his lectures, he used a kind of water clock whose waves emitted a sound that would notify him if it was time to prepare.

8. Computer

Before the sophisticated laptops existed an analogous mechanism known as Anticither, which was designed to pick up signals of moving celestial bodies or eclipses; also programmed it to determine calendar events, as an alarm. This first computer was invented roughly in 150 BC!

9. Sunglasses

You may think that this elegant and mysterious fashion accessory was immortalized when the beautiful Audrey Hepburn used them in the movie  Breakfast at Tiffany’s, but actually, before being a fashionista icon, the sunglasses were aimed at protecting the eyes of the snow blindness in the Inuit village community (Eskimo).
